Using Path Redundancy with SRT Streaming

With the release of version 3.5, Media Gateway/SRT Gateway supports path redundancy in SRT Listener and Caller modes. This feature allows you to create multiple network paths from the input to the same output. Typically, each path is run over a different network carrier in case of an outage from one carrier.

Note

As illustrated in the following figure, Path Redundancy provides for network path/link redundancy, not equipment redundancy.

To set up two Haivision Gateways for path redundancy as illustrated in the above figure:

  1. On your source streaming device, output a stream to your local Gateway.

  2. On the local Gateway, create a new input, output, and route using the two. See Creating a Route for more details.

    1. For the new input, populate the desired settings for the incoming stream.

    2. For the output:

      1. Select the TS over SRT protocol and Caller type.

      2. In Path Redundancy Mode, select one of the following modes:

        • Active-Active — Stream packets are sent on all defined network paths. The listener uses the first received stream packets and ignores the duplicate packets received from the other network paths. This mode maintains low latency at the expense of network bandwidth.

        • Active-Backup — Stream packets are sent only on the main network path. If the main path fails, one of the backup paths begins transmission of the stream. This mode saves network bandwidth at the expense of latency.

      3. For each network path, select a network interface, enter the remote Gateway address, and enter a unique port number.

      4. Enter the desired SRT streaming parameters.

  3. On the remote Gateway, create a new input, output, and route using the two.

    1. For the new input:

      1. In Protocol, select TS over SRT.

      2. Select the Listener type and Any Path Redundancy Mode.

        Note: For the SRT Listener, when Path Redundancy is used, the mode value must be Any or must match the value used by the SRT Caller.

      3. For each network path, select a network interface and enter the same port numbers as defined in Step 2b.

      4. Enter the appropriate SRT streaming parameters to correlate with those parameters on the local Gateway.

    2. For the new output, select the desired output information for the outgoing stream to your decoder.

  4. Start the streams on both Gateways. See Starting, Stopping, Duplicating, and Deleting a Route for details.

You have now successfully configured your Gateways for SRT Path Redundancy.
